Can the hydrangea be planted in the shade?

yes north side of house
Can the hydrangea be planted in the shade?
Olivia is right -- it depends on how hot it gets in the afternoon in the sun in your yard. Generally, sun in the morning, shade in the afternoon is the "SAFE" advice that you will get for raising hydrangea. Keep them well watered where ever you plant them! Keep them well - mulched.
Reply:hydrangeas need morning sun and afternoon shade. so plant them o nthe side of the house that gets full sun before noon, and shade afterwards.
Reply:Oh, I hate this question! It is so vague it just kills. If you are looking for a shrub that flowers and love hydrangea, go ahead, plant only the Annabelle hydrangea in your shade.

If you live in zone 8 or 9 in the US South plant it in the shade, however, it and every other hydrangea anywhere but the deep South will be happier in the sun...PROVIDED...they receive enough WATER.

It is not an accident that "hydra" is Greek for water and hydrangea starts with hydra.
