What is your opinion on my wedding colors?

My gown is ivory with a tiny bit of champagne color accents. The brides maids dresses are going to be lilac. The men will wear black tuxes with lilac vest and bow tie, I want the flowers to be ivory colored roses, shades of purple hydrangeas, white stephanotis, and just a touch of something pink, and silver accents.

All bows for flowers/pews/doors will be large silver bows.

So what do you think? I know its up to me and what I want, but I would just like some opinions on what you guys think! Thanks in advance!! :)
What is your opinion on my wedding colors?
That sounds beautiful. Elegance comes to mind.

For my wedding, my wedding dress was diamond white. My colors were lilac or lavender and light blue. I liked the contrast. I also wanted my bridesmaids and the men to be comfortable with the colors. (pink was out)

In the bouquets, the florist threw in some yellow and it looked beautiful. It made everything pop (all of the colors).

It sounds like your wedding is going to be absolutely beautiful.

Congratulations and I hope you enjoy yourself. I hope it's everything you want it to be.
Reply:It sounds a little washed-out. Like there might not be enough contrast between the colors, and they could all end up looking white/gray/nondescript in the photos.
Reply:The ivory and lilac is lovely, but skip the silver. If you need another accent colour, go with a darker purple.
Reply:Sounds good, have you thought about putting the groom in a champagne vest to match you since you both are the stars of the day and your dress has the champagne in it?
Reply:yeah it sounds really pretty so go 4 it
Reply:I'm renewing my vows with my husband and my colors are champagne and lilac and I am putting my hubby's best man in lilac (tie and vest) in charcoal grey tuxedo as well as my Matron of Honor in lilac

With champagne, lilac and white it makes it work, you're doing just fine so, hang in there and have fun, don't stress too much about it, it will go better if you can let some of the stress go.
Reply:I think it sounds beautiful. Its soft and elegant but not over the top. Good job in my book. :0)
Reply:My opinion is..... it's beautiful.
Reply:If you love it then go for it..I'm more of a bright bold colors girl but thats just my style, go for whatever fits you best after all its YOUR big day! So have fun with it and get what you want. CONGRATS BY THE BY!
Reply:It sounds very pretty, Just not my style I like bright bold colors rather than pastels.
Reply:It sounds well thoughout and very pretty. Good Luck!
Reply:Sounds beautiful but imho, if your gown is ivory and you have champagne accents you should probably go with gold bows, not silver. I think if you were wearing white and the accent was different I would go with silver.
Reply:As long as your guys are ok wearing lilac! I had a coral wedding and my guys wore a silver vest so they didn't feel girly! But other then that, it sounds pretty!
Reply:I absolutely love it, it's soft, elegant, sophisticated, romantic, and unusual. Love it!
Reply:that's an awesome combination. i love ivory over white. its much more elegant. i also liek the idea of the lilac as well, it fits with every season
Reply:Trust me absolutely gorgeous. Those are the colors my wedding party is wearing. I love all the colors in the purple family so I chose lilac and silver for my party. I asked the question the other day about the flowers what colors and people said it is ok to do other purples inside of the bouquets instead of just keeping it plain and simple with just lilac, so we will have lilac, silver and a few hints of two more purples. Good Luck.

What color should my bridesmaid dresses be, in order to match my dress and flowers?...pics included!?

My bridesmaid's and I are trying to figure out what color/stye their dresses should be. We're all at a complete loss so any advice would be great! (especially if you can provide links! :) )

As of right now the only two colors I'm working with are white and a pale blue (the color of the hydrangeas in my bouquet below)

We would prefer not to have them wear light blue dresses, so what other color would also look good? and of course...what style do you think is best?

Below are the links to my dress, my bouquet, and my venue, and the church, just to give you an idea of the feel of my wedding.

(it should be noted that the reception will probably be mostly white, with some light blue and potentially silver accents....very clean and crisp....so the bridesmaid's dresses won't neccessarily have to match or be incorporated into the venue)

oh and this is an April 2009 wedding!

Thanks so much for all your help! I look forward to your answers!

I would think that a nice pale yellow or a pale green color would look beautiful in that room.

Maybe something along the lines of these colors...

Reply:Liked the suggestion of a pale green. What about pale yellow? If your bouquet has a pinkish rose in it, what about pale pink? Just be sure to have lots of contrast between dress color and flowers so they'll show nicely in pics.
Reply:Periwinkle or lavender would be nice, even a dusty rose or the right shade of green...

Reply:I have gone for a blue and white wedding, my dress has a very pale blue in it so for my bridesaids instead of going for the same blue, their dreses are royal blue. Its goes with alll the flowers as we are having blue hyasithms and hydrangeas.

Hope you have a lovely day, and good luck
Reply:I would go with periwinkle or any spring colors. I would also add more color to bouquet, it is dull looking.
Reply:Your wedding is going to be beautiful. I was thinking that dresses in the color of champagne would be beautiful. These can be accessorized with beautiful flowers in their hair that could be a blue to match your bouquet. Congralutations. Just remember that's it's not the wedding that matters, but the marriage.
Reply:I also think a silver would be nice. It would accent everything perfectly.
Reply:I love his show and love these dresses. It's real housewives of orange county. no idea where they got the dresses, but it is Lauri's wedding episode 3-11 (season 3 episode 11). and that green is the prettiest colour. I love this dress in truffle (you'll have to click on the truffle color box!)...it sort of matches your gown style...

You could have a pale blue and chocolate brown color scheme....but again, I'm so drawn to the browns!

Have fun deciding and best wishes to you!!
Reply:I think that a medium blue color would be really nice, I'm not into silver so much and I think that turquoise or teal would clash witht hte hydrangeas as would a really ice blue, April is gorgeous in San Diego so I think I would do teal length dresses, maybe somethinf either lacy or filmy to go with your dress and the reception site.

Gerbera Daisies & boutonnieres & corsages???

I'm doing all of my own flowers and I'm mainly using Gerbera daisies %26amp; hydrangeas for my wedding bouquet and for the Bridesmaids. However, they are too large for corsages and boutonnières so I don't know what flower to use. Does anyone have a somewhat inexpensive idea? Also, my colors are alternating BM dresses of Wine %26amp; Dark purple.. what color gerberas would look good in a September wedding? I was thinking opposite gerbera daisies for the BM, but I'm afraid since they are both dark colors they'll drowned each other out.. any suggestions?
Gerbera Daisies %26amp; boutonnieres %26amp; corsages???
For the the boutonnieres you could always use carnations. They are a fairly inexpensive flower, and they look nice. Here is an example of what the carnation boutonneire's and corsages would look like...

http://www.vogueflowers.com/images/thumb...

http://www.filgifts.com/images/product/s...

As for the BM's...you said that you had them in alternating colors, which will look beautiful, do you also want them to have alternating bouquets? Or would you prefer they all had the same bouquets?

For the BM bouquets you could get the white gerbera daisies, then add in some different color carnations (they come in a purple color...you could add a burgundy or mauve color to the bouquet as well). Mums are also in season, and that is a fairly affordable flower as well. You may also want to look into the mini gerbera daisies as well as the mini carnations.

I hope that this helps! Good luck :)
Reply:A single gerbera daisy looks silly for a boutonniere, just so you know. Better to use several mini asters - they look very close, and come in beautiful fall colors.
Reply:I'm getting married in November... and our colors are burgundy and gold/yellow... both of which are Gerbera colors. We've decided to use regular Gerberas for the bridesmaids to carry... and mini gerberas and simply use 1 flower for the guys. Gerberas come in great and bright colors! So... have lots of fun with it!!
Reply:Use mini-gerbera daisies for the men. That's what I'm doing for my FH. I'm having a hand tied bouquet of red gerbera daisies, and he's having a red mini boutonnière.

Good luck, and Congratulations!
Reply:Why not use the hydrangeas for the corsages and boutonnières?

Wedding dinner menu?

I want to do a sit down dinner with servers, i know that can get super expensive, but.. i dont have all that much money. what are some good yet simple and possibly a little on the cheaper side menu ideas. I know we both want fried green beans, those are our favorite food. what can we have to compliment those. we are also going to do a fruit/cheese/veggie table with a chocolate fountain and punch fountain and have 3 cakes, one of which is a surprise he doesn't know about. my wedding cake is red velvet and his will be probably something lemon. his favorite. we are doing black and white with a little pink (in the flowers, mini calla lillies, pink and white hydrangeas.) i want the food to match the elegant simple wedding. if that makes any sense.
Wedding dinner menu?
You could do a "pasta alredo" type of dish where they toss some shrimp or (even cheaper) grilled chicken into the dish. That way it's mostly pasta, which is not expensive. You could serve that w/ a side of broccoli spears or green beans, or broccolini, maybe some "matchstick" veggies of carrots, squash, and zucchini. They'd be pretty on the plate and are not expensive veggies like asparagus. Serve rolsl and butter on the table. Wedding cake(s) for dessert along w/ choc. fountain. The fruit/cheese/veggie trays would be good for snackign on after the meal, while dancing or whatever goes on.

To be honest, I know you both love fried green beans, but I dont' see them as "elegantly simple." Plus, it is very difficult to serve a sit-down meal to numerous guest w/ fried food coming out hot and tasty. Often it just comes out cold and grasy, and that is just how large-group plate assembly goes. So, I'd suggest skipping them, and just eat plenty on your honeymoon! :-)
Reply:do a fondu type menu then. Finger foods. Sliced meats, chicken pieces, steak pieces, and have like teriyaki or cheese(multi flavors) fondu %26amp;veggies etc.) Include a dessert fondu with marshmellows, fruit, poundcakes, gram crackers, and cookies to dip into milk choc and white choc fondu and/or whipped creams(cold). Have small baby choc chips or spinkles to have to dip too. this can fit the black and white theme.
Reply:A marinated pork roast would compliment your green beans and sliced elegantly beside them could be some marinateded beets for color and taste, some roasted heirloom potatoes,,some sliced heirloom tomatoes with a champagne vinegrette, all colors ,with rosemary and lavendar and some sauteed greens in a red wine vinegar, with garlic and lemon .Garnish with fresh flower petals and sprigs of rosemary.Wishing you a happy life..
Reply:I would serve chicken or pasta. Usually those are the least expensive. I know you really want the green beans, but I don't think they'll turn out that good. When they try to fry that many beans, they'll probably just be greasy and gross... :( . I'd have bread and butter on the tables, have a lettuce salad and dressing served first, then chicken with mashed potatoes and a veggie. Then cake. I think you'll just have to check with your venue/ caterer and see what's the best they can do per plate.
Reply:pasta is cheap! served with a red or white sauce.

you can do chicken cordon bleu with a rice pilaf and fried green beans (love them btw!)

or chicken crouquettes (like crab cakes but made from chicken) with gravy, whipped potatoes and fresh steamed, sorry fried, green beans

you sound a lot like me but i'm having ours buffet style with a home cooking kind of feel to the food.
Reply:I would start with either a simple mixed green salad or a creamed soup like, cream of shrimp. A little of something expensive can go a long way in making the meal seem elegant. There are some great chicken breast recipies like Chicken oscar or chicken parmesean that don't seem like just ordinary chicken. I'd also try to serve an additional meat, Maybe a pineapple glazed ham for those who don't like chicken. Mashed sweet potaotes with honey, butter, and pecans would go good with either meat and your green beans will add a lovely color to the plate. Personaly I'd stay away from pasta unless your family and friends are big eaters. Only because to me pasta is too every day like mac %26amp; cheese

I need help with flowers for my wedding! HELP!?

I will be getting married in a little over a year. Our colors will be green and black. My Fiance is in the Army, and he will be wearing his Class A's, which are dark green. My dress is white with ivory pearls and embroidery. The groomsmen will be wearing black tuxes. I want to use silk flowers, because I would like black flowers. I was thinking of some sort of black flower, gardenias, and green hydrangeas. Could you tell me what you think about maybe using other kinds of flowers, tell me what types to use, and what color you think the bridesmaid dresses should be, along with an accent color for the dresses? I really like green, white, and black together so I'm sticking with these colors. Also, it will be a summer wedding, so In-Season flowers are preferrable. Thank you very much! Any comments are greatly appreciated!
I need help with flowers for my wedding! HELP!?
I think the bridesmaids would look great in either black or green (or even black with a green sash or green with a black sash). You could just get them all to buy a black dress that way they get to choose a style that will suit them and they can wear again.

As for flowers:

http://i13.photobucket.com/albums/a266/a...

I love this bouquet with black leaves rather than black flowers- you could tie it with a green ribbon: http://budgetdreamweddings.com/weddingpl...

Black calla lillies: http://66.34.224.169/uploads/images/cont...

Black irises: http://www.directgardening.com/large/421...

You could go for real: black leaves or black flowers such as black calla lillies or black irises. Some florists will also dye certain (real) flowers black for you (e.g. Orchids stems can be put into black colouring, which will make the flowers turn black- the same as they do to get blue orchids).

Sometimes silk black flowers can look really fake as they're kind of shiny due to the dark colouring - so look for good quality if you really must go with fake.

I'd also suggest mixing up the black with green or white (or both) just so the bouquets aren't too dark, as they won't photograph as well if you have a whole lot of all black flowers clumped together.

If you were to go for black bridesmaid dresses, I think green and white flowers would look really nice (e.g. the first link above). A green or white flower to go with the black tuxes would also look good, rather than having black on black.
Reply:Have you thought of using feathers in your bouquets? My sister got married in October, and her colors were red, gold, and black. We used fluffy black feathers like these ostrich feathers: http://images.google.com/imgres?imgurl=h... and red silk roses. You could use a pale green for the flowers, like these: http://www.onesourceweddings.net/bouquet... which looks AWESOME with a darker green, like your fiance's uniform. In fact, shades of green are pretty easy to mix. Green is a great neutral in florals (have you ever heard anyone say "Those green leaves don't match that flower!"? Of course not.), so you can pretty much go with whatever green catches your eye. Same with the bridesmaids dresses, though a pale granny-smith-apple green would be really pretty. I'd avoid the muddy sage color that was so popular a few years ago. It's just kind of bland. You could also go with knee length black dresses for the bridesmaids- much easier for them to wear again.
Reply:If you are wearing ivory I would use cream, green and black together as your colors as white would be stark against the other colors. With that in mind, you could spray carnations (mini or medium) black or even roses that are cream with black tips. Also spray baby's breath a cream color. The bridesmaid dresses could be either green with cream sashes or cream with green sashes.
Reply:I would put the bridesmaids in a lighter version of the greens in your fiances Class A's with the black flowers. OR.. black and white dresses with a green sash. Solid black dresses, and you won't see the black flowers.
Reply:pink accents might look nice...a soft pink or a bright pink might be the "lift" that it needs.

Reply:I am looking in to silks and this is the site I found what I needed. They have a color spray you can buy and you can use it on real or fake flowers I suggest looking under floral supply when you google. Here is the site I am getting my stuff from. Good luck your bestfriend will be Researching for this stuff now you are on the right track! Best wishes!
Reply:If you're using silk flowers, why do you care whether or not they're in season? I don't mean to sound cheeky, but that's part of the benefit of using fake vs. real flowers, right? You get more freedom in what you choose to use!

Try looking for a lot of white blooms to throw in there to avoid making the decor look too gloomy. There are plenty of different types of greenery to choose from, so it should tie in COMPLETELY with your color scheme! White Dendrobium Orchids are BEAUTIFUL and in season between April and August. Chrysanthemum and Dahlias are also beautiful, white, summer flowers.

As far as black flowers go, I just found out about the black viola - they're BEAUTIFUL! ( https://www.anniesannuals.com/signs/v%20... )

Another really pretty (black and white) flower is the Penny Black Nemophila. ( http://www.nickys-nursery.co.uk/seeds/ne... )

I see no reason that your bridesmaids couldn't wear green or black. Black is a very elegant colour, and green can be very cheery, although if you're worried about clashing with the colour green the groom will be wearing, maybe it'd be better to stick with the black. (I'm guessing you don't want to share the white..!)
Reply:BLACK CALLA LILLIES , BLACK VELVET ROSES
Reply:Calla Lily would be great for your wedding, it has a long green stalk with a white petal. The meaning of the flower is beauty.
Reply:green tea roses can look gorgeous!

http://www.ftd.com/vera-wang-ppr/vera-wa...

you could always tie the stems in black ribbon
Reply:First, there are real black flowers, so think about that. Black Magic Roses are near black and there are dark purple calla's that also look black. If you want to do something a little more affordable ask a florists for alternative suggestions. Even if you don't have a florist make the arrangements, they can help you find flowers that work with your color scheme. There are so many options out there, you need an expert to help you narrow it down.

In regards to the girls dresses, black might be a little severe for summer, but if you do a cute short dress, or a black and white floral print, it could be very cute!
Reply:Well, first, let me try to talk you out of the black flowers; if you use silk flowers, it would really look better to use ones as close looking to fresh as possible. Since black flowers don't exist in nature, I would stick with the green and ivory for the flowers themselves. Maybe white roses and green hydrangeas with black ribbon and maybe a hint of black feathers! That would be fabulous!

If you wanted to add another color to this, I would suggest a pink; pink %26amp; green, pink %26amp; black are very nice together!

I can't find the website anymore, but they had pictures of centerpieces that had white and offwhite flowers and green hydrangeas. I believe there was some pink mixed in.

I love the green apples used in the post above!
Reply:Sounds like a cool color combo. I like the link provided above by Gracie M (the first one) The apples in the centerpeices is neat. Especially the more simple ones with the "fish bowl" and the apple and the rocks. You could replace the rock with brown candy (choco pieces or M%26amp;M's that are all brown with your initials on them).
Reply:I'm telling you they are not going to be thinking "oh, she's so beautiful!" They'll be thinking, "What the hell was she thinking?" You colors are overwhelming and are going to distract the importance of the event, your wedding. That green has to go.
Reply:Try Google Images. They'll have thousands of images to choose from. Just adjust what you see according to your budget.

Ummm, those colors make me think of chocolate mints!

How can I decorate the pews inexpensively for the ceremony?

I am on a tight budget and had not intended to decorate the pews in the church for the ceremony in Oct. But other people are telling me that it is sooo important as that is the first thing your guests see when they come into the church..... I am having 2 large arrangements on the altar. My friend used a spray of hydrangeas tied to a satin ribbon for each pew, but I am getting married in Denver and it is too dry for hydrangeas to hold up. My florist said it would be a minimum of $25 per pew and I would need to do at least 10. Do you feel this is important? Any low cost ideas would be appreciated!
How can I decorate the pews inexpensively for the ceremony?
I have honestly never seen pews decorated at any wedding I have attended. I can't imagine anyone being scandalized by it either because they are not important. Since you're on a tight budget, use the money elsewhere to upgrade something that guests will actually remember (food and music) and skip the pew decorations.
Reply:for our wedding we used pew bows all u do is go to the dollar store get ribbon and fake flowers use the ribbon the thick kind to make a bow and then put the flower in the middle of the bow this would only cost 20-30 or less
Reply:If you have two nice arrangements at the front of the church decorating the pews with flowers really isn't necessary. If you don't want to decorate the pews, then don't bother. It's one more expense and thing for you to fiddle with when you already have a lot on your mind, plus big bows and fabric can make it cumbersome for your guests getting in and out of the pews. If you decide to decorate them you can look for coupons for Michael's in the Sunday paper and go buy inexpensive supplies (ribbon, bows, etc.). Michael's also has a couple of 'wedding sales' a year. A friend of mine bought bows, netting, fabric, etc. at the dollar store for her pews and no one had a clue as to how much it cost. Orientaltrading.com might have some items you could use as well.
Reply:You can buy a bolt of tulle for about $15. Cut the tulle in half width wise. You will now have two pieces of tulle 15 yards long by 20-22" wide. Starting at the front of the church secure the tulle to the pews allowing it to drape gracefully. You don't have to do all the pews. Just the first few rows. You can add either bows or flowers to accent. For bows you can buy a spool of tulle 6" wide and 15 yards long for $6 You will easily get one bow per yard.

Heres an example with flowers and flower petals instead of bows

    http://www.weddingbee.com/wp-content/upl...
Reply:Not even a little bit necessary and sometimes those decorations are really annoying. You have to worry about knocking them off the pew when you're trying to get in. I didn't have any pew decorations and it looked fine. I also refused to buy any flowers for the church, because they were totally rude. It looked fine without, of course they didn't let us take any pictures after the ceremony, only during, which makes no sense at all and is what prompted me to not decorate it at all.

Liz's picture is really nice, but how are the guests supposed to get in and out of the pews? Making them go around to other side is kind of rude.
Reply:Those cones are pretty- that's a good idea, if you're crafty.

For our wedding, we had six markers- I put them on every other pew in the front. That way, they were in the pictures, but I didn't have to spend a small fortune decorating the fifty pews in my church!

I wouldn't stress about this, if it's really going to impact your budget or be difficult for you to pull off, don't do it. Honestly, no one will miss them if you don't.
Reply:I bought pre-made pew bows from Michael's made out of chiffon and we put them on every other pew, I think 8 or 10 came in each box. It was just enough to make it look nice and not like you were going to church on a Sunday. Whats the point on spending thousands on flowers that you will only see for a 1/2 hour or an hour tops. My cousin spent $10,000 on flowers for the ceremony alone and the day after the flowers were just hanging in their house dying. What a waste.
    Reply:Hi and congratulations!

If you are on a tight budget....forget decorating the pews! Don't listen to those that tell you to. Really, it is hardly noticed OR appreciated. You will certainly not be looked down upon. Also, if you do want to....check with the church first! I work as a church secretary and you can't believe the things people want to do to decorate!! Check with the church office first. If it is OK, and you still want to do something, there are many, many, many sellers of "pew bows" on Ebay. Some are as little as $2 each!

Check out Ebay....but, again, don't feel pressured if you are on a limited budget. Your guests will be looking at you....not how you have the church decorated!
Reply:Start by finding beautiful but inexpensive ribon. Then make your own bows. if you don't know how email me. Even just a bow will give a great look and there is such a variety of pretty ribbons. This way they are decorated but you didn't go broke for the 20 minute part of the day.
Reply:silk flowers with ribbon, much cheaper.
Reply:My first comment is no, it isn't important to decorate the pews and really no one is going to be like 'omg I cannot believe it I went to her wedding and she didn't even decorate the pews!!' I don't know what your colors are or if this seems like something you'd be interested in, but I'll tell you what we are doing. We are on a tight budget too but I want to decorate. I bought white tulle (you can get inexpensively from ebay stores or Walmart) and I am going to hang tulle the whole way down, tying it on every other pew and sprinkling fake lavender rose petals inside the tulle...I have a picture if you want to see. It isn't my wedding but it's how I plan to do it. If you want to see the pic email me scent.sational@hotmail
Reply:You can use silk flowers (the high quality ones, not dollar tree ones that scream IM FAKE! from across the room). Another option would be to drape tulle along the aisle and have a few petals scattered in it very inexpensively.

Depending on what you have chosen for centerpieces you may be able to construct some pillars and have them do double duty as your reception decor.

Honsetly though....it's not that important to decorate the pews. The church is already beautiful and the pews really don't show up in your photos. Once they reach their seats most people are busy chatting....not scrutinizing if you decorated your pews or not.
Reply:A nice concept that can be very affordable but only if it matches your colors, go to a flower shop that sells supplies and get very small (2"-3") foam oaisis balls, get a ton of button mums (the green ones) and use floral glue and pins to adhear them to the balls, tie a ribbon to the top of each and hang from the pews. Probably would cost around $100 tops....

Or you can just use a really nice silk ribbon in your wedding color and tie it with a hardy flower that will withstand the heat, say a cymbidium orchid, you can buy a stem of betwen 15-20 blooms for about $25 through flower markets.
Reply:I just made flowers for my pews. They cost me about $10.00 ea.

http://www.save-on-crafts.com/pewmarkers... this will show you how to make them.

    Congrats!
Reply:Decorating the pews always depends upon how big the church is, how formal it is and is there enough room for you to walk down the aisle in your dress and with the decor.

    Ideas for October-

Ivory/White double sided ribbon, tied with a simple knot, having one piece lay over the other straight down to the floor. In the knot glue some leaves, nicely arranged and not to pouffy. Sparsely glue leaves on the ribbon here and there down to the floor. ( Or use greenery, or mums ect.)

At the base of the pew on the floor have a potted plant that is very hardy like mums. Only use those at the base of the pew where you are going to be sitting family.
Reply:We didn't use any decorations for our church. Usually the church is pretty enough. It worked out fine.

    Wedding flower help!?

i am getting married next june. my colors are ivory, sage, and a touch of light pink. i want my flowers to be Calla Lilly's and Hydrangeas. what do you think? any other ideas.

i havent been to the Florists yet but how much aprox. does Calla Lilly's and Hydrangeas cost?
    Wedding flower help!?
I think the colors and flower types are a beautiful choice - very elegant - -good job, I am sure it will be beautiful just as you are planning it.
Reply:Go to a good florist, and they can recommend what is best and at lower costs for you. Some pink and white roses would be pretty. For the bridal bouquet get something that brightens your wedding dress.,
Reply:Hello, these days callas (mini or standard) run arroun $9 per stem depending where you are. June is off season, so the head size will likely be a little smaller then average and the cost a little higher then average - although they are still readily available.

The hydranea will run between $9 and $15 depending on size

It would be real pretty to do a mix of white mini callas and sage hydrangea and a really soft pink roses. I havve done this before and it was soft and beautiful.

Just a note - most white flowers fall somewhere between whtie and ivory. If you want a true ivory flower, change the above to soft pink mini calla and an ivory rose - such as vandella.

Cost: for an average size round style bouquet, hand tied I would chage $150

I have a picture of this, but I would need to get it scanned and email to you if you would like.
Reply:very nice choice but cala lilies are very expesive, more then $5 a flower generally!
Reply:I think those flower choices could be very pretty.

Here you can check out available shades of hydrangeas:

    http://www.fiftyflowers.com/flowers/AllF...

They have some very pretty light green/pink shades.

    Also, here are callas:

    http://www.fiftyflowers.com/flowers/AllF...

They have a bright green calla, and several pink and ivory shades of mini callas.

    Good luck!
Reply:You have plenty of time to talk to florists and they will know what flowers will be available for a June wedding. I think the Hydrangeas may be too big of a flower for the delicateness of your dress. Your color choice is very nice. Best wishes!
Reply:I use to work as a florist for 4 years until allergies got the best of me. lol . My daughter was married in July and she had calla lilies, peach roses and white lilies The calla's were more expensive than her roses since roses are so abundant in the summer. Calla's can be $3 to $5 each depending on their size and of course some will depend on where you live. Hydrangeas may be more expensive like up to $10. each. I have never had a call to use hydrangeas in wedding bouquet before. We just sold them as potted plants. To be honest, I don't know how well they hold up. Are you doing your own bouquets or having a florist do them? I can't tell you off hand the prices since I don't know the styles you are looking for. Arm bouquet? cut bundle? cascade? It doesn't hurt to go to the florist now to get some pricing so you know what you will find. They have books you can go through to get a feel of what you are looking for. Personally I would add some roses to your bouquet too and some bear grass. If you like fillers, I think you might like caspia instead of baby's breath. Chances of getting white callas are good. Sometimes it is harder to get the lovely colored ones in when you want them. BTW your dress is gorgeous!
Reply:your dress is beautiful! Here are some ideas for you

    http://weddings.theknot.com/odb/themes/s...

The Knot has some great pictures and will have price points for the flowers you are interested in. The great thing about Hydrangeas is that they are a nice full and will help keep some cost down.

The cost will really depend on your area and if they can get the flowers local.

    good luck and have fun!

Reply:I think Hydrangeas is too much, just have 1 or 2 Calla Lilly's with beautiful ribbon around it, simple yet beautiful and elegant.

A lawyer sues her florist.. Read and tell me your opinion.?

Elana Elbogen, a litigator at Kelley Drye in New York, married David Glatt at Cipriani 42nd St. this summer. She wasn’t happy with the floral arrangements. So she sued.

In a breach-of-contract lawsuit filed Friday against Posy Floral Design Studios in New York state court, Elbogen alleges that the florist substituted pastel pink and green hydrangeas for the dark rust and green hydrangeas that she had specified for the centerpieces. Other issues, says the lawsuit: “using wilted and/or browned flowers, leaving the event without filling half the centerpiece vases with water, and using dusty and dirty vases.” Here are stories from the NYT and NY Post.

“The use of predominantly pastel centerpieces had a significant impact on the look of the room and was entirely inconsistent with the vision the plaintiffs had bargained for,” says the lawsuit, according to the Times. They paid in advance for the flowers, which cost — yikes! — $27,435.14. After the wedding, they asked for a $4,000 refund. Now, they’re asking for $400,000 in damages.
A lawyer sues her florist.. Read and tell me your opinion.?
If you pay that much for the flowers at your wedding you deserve to get what you asked for. If what she says is true, and if she did ask for just $4000 back and the florist refused to consider it, well... A wedding is really important and wilted and brown flowers in the wrong colours would be very upsetting. And sometimes you have to ask for more than you really want just to get what you deserve. I hate that people now days tend to sue at the drop of a hat, but if someone won't negotiate and they are in the wrong, what other choice is there. Role over and play dead? Let people walk all over you? The florist contracted to perform a service and did not live up to her end of the deal.

Why do my hydrangea leaves look purple and green?

They have been hybridized to do so. Selective Breeding. We do this also with succulents. Fl to F3 We plant 50 -100 seeds, and then select plants from the propagation which has the features that we want. We then collect seed from the first batch and breed them again to get F2 and we may continue to this for several seasons to achieve what we were looking for and only keep three plants from the batch that have different features, that are different. Darker flowers, deeper indents in the leaves, larger teeth for the aloe, with better color, shorter flower stems, and more flowers on the inflorescence, wider leaves, or shorter or miniature plants. This will form a new gene pool you must have diversity in the pool. Once you get what you want, then you can start from cuttings or offsets which ever applies. Hoyakins
Why do my hydrangea leaves look purple and green?
If they normally have green leaves they sound like they have gotten a bit chilled. This makes them 'autumn toned'. I always leave my leaves on my hydrangeas and don't prune to get the autumn colours. If it is spring where you are the weather may have been unseasonally chilly and it has upset them. There are also some varieties that are bred to go nice colours in autumn, particularly the species hydrangeas.
Reply:It's because hydrangeas are very sensitive to acid levels in your soil. Different acidity levels result in different colored petals. For instance, the same periwinkle-blue hydrangea plant that my aunt grew in Kentucky, grew green and pink in Texas.

There's nothing wrong with your plant; it's simply an acidity indicator.

European Garden Theme Wedding?? Need some advice?

We finally decided on a theme for our wedding. My fiance is wearing a kilt, so we wanted something Scottish or European to fit with the kilt. We finally settled on a European or British Garden theme and here's what I have so far:

Colors (to match kilt): Navy blue and champagne with light blue and ivory accents

Flowers: Hydrangeas, ivory roses, peonies, rannunculas (sp?) and ivy

Favors: Plantable blue paper hearts that double as escort cards - they grow wildflowers when you plant the paper in the ground.

Bridesmaids: Tea length satin bubble dresses in navy blue with champagne sashes

Groomsmen: Black tuxes with navy blue or champagne vests (haven't decided yet)

I'm looking for more ways to tie in the theme with the decor for the reception and the ceremony. We'll probably do bunches of flowers tied to the ends of the chairs for church decorations, but does anyone have anymore suggestions? Unique ideas? Thanks!
European Garden Theme Wedding?? Need some advice?
Try to watch "Four Weddings and a Funeral" a british comedy from a few years back, staring Hugh Grant. In the movie, you can see 4 different weddings (one of them a scotish wedding wuth kilts)... I think that you can gather some cute ideas from this movie.

    Good luck

Reply:Serve tea during the time that would be the cocktail hour. I think that would be really cute - you can probably find some really nice pale blue cups and saucers. Then with the flower seeds, send a bag or two of the tea you drank home with your guests.

Maybe give your maids parasoles that are light blue and ivory as cute gifts and use them during your pictures.

Use doilies for the bottom of your center pieces, lots of tea light candles floating in bowls with peonies, have a bagpipe player play a song when you arrive at your reception, have your guests blow bubbles when you leave ... I can't really think of anything else ... but hopefully those are some ideas you can play off of.

    Wedding Bouquet?

Im using Red Hydrangeas for my Bouquet, and i was wondering what is a good flower to use for the boutonnieres?

    was thinking beige magnolia.

What do you think .. any pix you have would help

    Thanks

I like your idea, perhaps for the guys add a bit of ivy around it - the green will look great against the beige magnolia.
Reply:I love hydrangeas and think they make a lovely bouquet. I love magnolias, too. Will the beige magnolias be smaller than the white ones? The ones we have on our tree are about the size of a dinner plate when they are in full bloom. It you can get some small ones, that would be lovely for boutonnieres.

EDIT: It looks like they do breed smaller magnolias for arrangements and such. If you go with the magnolias, you may want to get some of the large blooms and float them in water in a pretty bowl as a centerpeice. Wish you lived near me! I could give you some from my mother's tree!
Reply:I think they are both nice flowers....just make sure they will hold up if you're having a summer wedding. A deep red and beige will look very nice together. You could also use hydrengea in the boutonnieres. I've seen this done in one of the magizines I bought to perpare for my wedding.

When are daisies and hydrangeas in season and would they be good to use together in wedding bouquets??
    Flower help!?!?!?
Daisy are available all year. They are an inexpensive and long lasting flower. Hydrangeas are strickly july/aug blooms. Mine are coming to the end right now, but what a crop of them I had this year! I think they would compliment each other. The different shapes are great together. I had periwinkle roses and wisteria and white spider mums. Silk of course. A lot of compliments on the selection of color and shape. A professional floral designer can do any combo you want and give you a honest opinion, also. It's your day...Best wishes!
Reply:I don't know much about hydrangeas... However for my past April wedding I used gerber daisies. I was able to find a gardener in my area who distributes to a local florist, so I was able to get a really good deal.

My bridesmaids dresses were sage green, and my favorite colour is pink.

So, their bouquets were various shades of pink. Then my bouquet had the same gerbers in it but also white roses. Gerbers are a large flower, but the bouquets were gorgeous. I can send photo's if you'd like.

It was also really pretty that their bouquets were one colour and mine was the same but fancier. Hope that helps.
Reply:Both are spring flowers. I LOVE hydrangeas. But I'm not sure they would do together in a bouquet as hydrangeas are a large flower.

Maybe you could use the hydrangea in some other arrangement in your wedding other than the bouquets, like pew markers or altar arrangements or even just a small arrangement on the table if you're using the unity candle.

But then again, if that's what you want, have a florist help you with ideas.

Flowers to go with red bridesmaid dress???

My bridesmaid dresses are red (apple) and i don't have any idea what color flowers i should have them carry. I am having a white bouquet with hydrangeas, roses, lilies, etc. and i wanted them to have a similar, but smaller version of that. The only problem is that not all of the flowers come in red and i thought that the red dresses and red flowers would be too "blood-like."

There are lots of questions from brides regarding flowers. I always say the same thing....but it's true...and that is:

~ Look through bridal magazines to get ideas!

~ Go and meet with A FLORIST! That is their business. You do not have to know what you want before you go in. They also have many, many books of previous weddings and they are there to guide you, help you with a decision, suggest flowers, and work within your budget!

    Here are my ideas:

~ DON'T have red flowers and red dresses....that won't look right.

~ I love the contrast of say....you having RED flowers...and your bridesmaids carrying white flowers. That looks great in pictures.

~ OR...just have a mixture of bright flowers for your bridesmaids....with some reds and other colors.

Good luck and, again my suggestion is to meet with a florist to help with a decision.

Reply:You can give them a mixture of red and white flowers. For example, use red roses and leave all other flowers white. It'll give the bouquets a flair without overdoing them.
Reply:Have them hold a single white rose or another large white flower. Maybe wrap a red ribbon around the stem. It would look very classy.
Reply:white roses, purple irises, maybe some red roses thrown in and some greenery. The purple irises will really stand out against a red dress. White roses %26amp; pink stargazer lillies would be pretty too.
Reply:You can do a smaller version of your bouquet for the bridesmaids. If you don't want to go with red for them you can still use roses, lillies and hydrangea since those flowers come in a variety of colors. You could possibly do theirs with red and white, maybe red roses or white or the redish colored lillies and white hydrangea.Or you can have them carry a bouquet that's totally different with any combination of gerbera daisies, daisies, carnations, wild flowers, etc. We recently did a wedding and the bridesmaids wore dark dresses, the bride chose bouquets of mixed colored gerbera daisies and it was very nice...
Reply:you need to speak to your florist. Peach, orange, yellow, red, white, pink, lavender all can go with a red dress if arranged properly and in correct scheme. I see no reason why they canot have a small version of your bouquet, the flowers do not all need to be red, use all white, or a pretty mix like I suggested above,

How many wedding flowers should I order? Are the flowers from Sam's Club any good?

i have to make my bridal bouquet, my bouquet for tossing, 7 bridesmaids bouquets, 12 boutineers, 5 pin on corsages, cake decorations, 20 larger centerpieces( large fish bowl jar), 40 smaller centerpieces(smaller fish bowl jar), and 2 large topiaries for outside of the tent. I do not want to use anything but pink roses for the wedding party but I plan on using pink roses and green hydrangea for my centerpieces. So tell me what you guys think.
How many wedding flowers should I order? Are the flowers from Sam's Club any good?
Yes. They are beautiful! I got them for my shower for centerpieces, and the planner at the place I had the wedding put them in bowls for me. I got married in Sept. and had fall flowers like sunflowers, mums and some roses. Good luck!!
Reply:Sam's Club usually has nice flowers and affordable. The color combination sounds really nice.

2 dozen roses for your bouquets

    4 dozen for bridesmaids

    2 dozen for corsages/boutineers

10 dozen for large center pieces (for 6 roses)

    4 dozen for small

    4 dozen for topiaries

    2 dozen for cake

So, get 30 dozen roses just to be safe.

I can't predict on the hydrangeas because I'm not certain of the size. Get more than you think you'll need, they're gorgeous filler.

I also made everything for my wedding...to save money. However, I was up until 3am the night before the wedding finishing. Be sure to get some help!

    Congratulations and best wishes!

What is a very good vine to grow on a wall?

I was thinking of possibly climbing hydrangea, or English Ivy , and anyone who could tell me the best way to train Englsih Ivy to climb a wall better and faster, I would appreciate it.

There is a strip of ground in between the sidewalk and the wall I am wishing to have this vine grow on. I think the are is around only 3 feet wide. IS it possible to contain this planted vine and have it grow very quickly vertically or not?

    how do you do this?

    Thanks for your answers!
What is a very good vine to grow on a wall?
Ivy will totally cover this area! In a few years you will be trimming and pulling it out to keep it under control. Have you considered a columnar shaped bush such as arborvitae or cypress. Look up columnar apple trees they sound nice.

Vines are nice but they do take over and this sounds like a small area.

Another idea would be an annual vine such as hummingbird vine.

Clematis are nice too and they are perennials.
Reply:Grape. That way, when it grows big enough and produces fruit, you can make your own wine.
Reply:English Ivy will take over everything. If you want to keep it in check i suggest planting it in a raised bed. Other than that you will have to be dilligent about pruning. Have you ever considered a climbing tee rose.

also Ivy growing on a wall may be very pretty but it can eventually harm the mortar of bricks and can do a number on siding. The tendrils that attach itself to whatever will grow into some pretty tight crack which degrades the material....eventually

New to Gardening and really need advice on flower bed design..?

I have a new bricked in flower bed that is about 15 feet wide and 3 feet deep. I am in zone 6b and the garden is in mostly full sun for the day.

So far I have two Emerald Isle Leyland Cypress (small spirals)and two Golden Euonymus to the rear of the bed. In front I have Hostas and some colorful annuals - petunias, celosia and coleus.

I still have a space to the rear (in the center) which I would like to fill in with something really eye-catching that will bring color in the spring and summer, and not die in the winter... I was thinking a Hydrangea, but I don't think it will do well in the full sun - and the winter frost may finish it off...

Any and all suggestions will be much appreciated. And if I am on the wrong track with my mix of plants - please let me know while I still have the pots and the receipt! :-) Thanks all...

A Nandina bush might be just the thing. It has pretty white flowers in spring/summer and bright red berries in the fall/winter. The leaves are soft, not sharp like Holly, and the bush can be trimmed and prunned if needed or left alone. Landscapers use it quite a bit in flower beds around the house. Check it out at your local nursery.
    Reply:Hi:

I am a landscaper and designer. There are many evergreen shrubs you could incorporate along the back of your garden. Here are a few suggestions:

Chinese Pizazz or Loropetalum - evergreen shrub with green and purple leaves year around. Pinkish flowers appear in spring and summer.

Lemon Thread or Mop Cypress - evergreen variegated yellow and green leaves year around. Great compliment to the Emerald Green and Euonymus.

If you have some shade, consider some Camellias or Pieris Japonica. One goal you may have is to try and get color year around, with different plants blooming at different times.

I will link you to the gallery of plants section of my website as well as the variety of more plants. There are many photos, descriptions and zones that may give you some ideas for the back of you garden. If you need more suggestions, feel free to contact me and I would be happy to help you. Good luck and have a great day!

Reply:You might have found a variety of Hosta that will tolerate full sun, but they're rare. Hostas are shade loving plants.

You are in a warmer zone than me, so have more options. For your remaining space, how about a mixture of daylilies. They are tall enough and very pretty, with lots of colors to choose from. You might be able to get selections that bloom successively in slightly different times, to extend the flowering season. The leaves are quite attractive when blooming is over. Another option is roses. I have a patio rose tree that blooms nonstop all summer. Or the standard bush type. It is a bit tricky for me to overwinter, but you should be OK.

  • What color of curtains/draperies compliment well for a large bedroom with gray walls throughout?

The gray walls in my bedroom seem to change shade: during the day, it's more of a blue gray, but at night, the color can change to a tint of a purple gray due to the brazillian cherry wood floor, which adds richness to the dullness of the gray walls in the large room.

I like the previous suggestions I received of accenting the bedroom with blues, lilacs, and/or purples. I was thinking about using a dark plum purple duvet cover in the winter by accenting the bedroom with deep purples and lighter shades of puples, but for the spring and summer, I would like to change my bedding color by getting a comforter (in a shade of hydrangea blue) to give freshness to the room by changing out my accent colors maybe to the light blue hues with some silver. I would like to keep one set of curtains though. What color curtains would be good that would compliment well with dark plum purple as well the lighter blue color? Any ideas would help. Thanks!

Try to use the hydrangea blue in the curtains as well. Too many colours will make the room busy.

How difficult is it to create a garden the old fashioned way?

How does one till a patch of land next to the foundation of a home to plant flowers? When I was a little girl my daddy would grow a garden using only a shovel and a hoe (dark ages) and I have very few tools myself being new to home ownership. I have a wall facing south that gets a lot of sun and I'd like to plant flowers that would put you in mind of what a grandmother of the 40's or 50's would plant....iris', peony, hydrangea, crepe myrtly, etc. Any suggestions on how to do gardening before modern conveniences came along would be greatly appreciated. Thanks for the help!
How difficult is it to create a garden the old fashioned way?
You could do it with a shovel and hoe. Mark out where your going to plant. Then using the shovel dig deep and turn the soil over. Leave it like this for a while this will kill what ever is growing there right now. The when your ready to plant bust up the soil that you turned over with either tool. Then even it out with your hoe. You can use news paper as a cheap ground cover to help keep weeds down. Just cover it with mulch It will decompse and wont cause problems when you dig in the future.

As far as plants go with what you would like. You'll learn what grows best in the site you picked.
Reply:Get a Dung Fork or Spading Fork and start breaking up the soil. Strenuous, but not impossible work. Easier if the soil is somewhat mosit. Pull out grass/weeds (shake soil off roots). You might want to mix in some compost or manure. Plant away. I also recommen mulch to keep the weeds down.
Reply:Like another poster alluded to, foundations plantings have their issues but if that's where you want to put your plants, I would suggest using a layered-garden technique. Using cardboard and/or newspapers, put down about a 1" layer on the spot you want to plant. It doesn't matter what's already there (except for concrete) and you don't have to dig anything. Wet this thoroughly. Then cover it with soil--bagged, free, whatever (about 6" deep). If it's a relatively small area I would buy a good, bagged soil mix and add some compost. You'll end up with a "raised bed" that's good for drainage but it will settle eventually. Then you can put in your plants or seeds and when they are tall enough you can mulch around them to keep the weeds down and make it look neat and tidy. Be careful that the soil doesn't touch the bottom of the siding otherwise you can have rot problems and/or pests infiltration--both reasons not to plant next to your foundation. Another reason is watering next to your foundation--you want your plants to grow deep roots but you don't want water sitting next to your foundation--difficult paradigm.
Reply:PLEASE remember if you till next to your foundation to keep the ground sloping away from your home. All water should roll away from your foundation. When you plant you will be watering and it will rain. This is good for your garden and as long as the excess can roll away from your foundation it is great for your home as well.

If the water seeps to your foundation you will have trouble in a few years.

The best way to start a garden like this is to break the ground rake or shovel the loose dirt in a mound along the foundation while raking toss any grass or weeds or roots out of the dirt and in to a trash can. Once the dirt is mounded against the wall of the house start raking it back out at a slant still keeping the highest part by the foundation wall. Once the dirt is graded at a slight slant, put down seeds or plants that are good for your area. The ones you mentioned should come with the instructions on the proper time to plant in your area.

If you want a raised flower bed this can be done by purchasing a roll of this black garden mess. This will be blanketed over the area where you want the garden. Lay it over weeds grass and all. Then take old rail road lumber or other choice or lumber or bricks up to 6 or 12 inches. Fill this in with top soil, or garden soil of your choice and plant the flowers you seleced acording to proper planting times for your area.

    Blue dresses? green flowers?
I think you can do it. The dress can't get any less blue and still go with the hydrangeas. Don't fret the green, it will set off the blue nicely. More white you'd need a texture change and that's not easy.

Don't be too picky with the blue flower in your bouquet, choices are limited in blues.

I accidentally ran over a snake in my driveway, it was pinned under my tire?
Unfortunately, he probably will not survive. It actually depends on what part of the body you ran over- if you got some internal organs smooshed, they probably won't survive.

But, there's still a chance it will survive, especially if you got him on the lower part of his body... who knows. I'm glad you are not one of these rude and pathetic people who would kill it or run it over more.. grr.

Property in zone 5, a few gardening questions?

    Hi

We are in zone 5 (south eastern Ontario, Canada). I am wondering how to take care of some Hydrangea I planted last fall. The flower heads were left on all winter and now these shrubs are brown and dry. Do I cut the flower heads off now? should I cut the whole plant down or.....do I just leave it until I see the leaves come back? Also, my lawn (if you can call it that) is just mowed weeds. The soil is sandy in most parts. Where do I begin to improve my lawn to something I can walk on barefoot someday (short of ripping it all up and putting down sod). Its almost 2 acres of cut weeds and we are surrounded by a forest.

Any help with where I should begin would be greatly appreciated.

    Thanks!

    2. Lawn

It would be best to let a professional lawn service or landscaper put in a lawn for you the first time. Be sure to ask them how to take care of it.

It would also be best to put in an automatic lawn sprinkler system because water is what makes a lawn pretty. It is a must to have a good weekly watering and mowing schedule.

But if you want to do it yourself, go here:

How to grow a lawn, click this link

    http://www.wikihow.com/Grow-a-Lawn-Easil...
Reply:for ur hydrngeas- cut them back after the frost has gotten it and made it wilt - they will come out even bigger in spring
Reply:keep the heads and what ever you do DONT EVER cut off the stems. hydraneas bloom only on old wood so if the stalks were cut it wouldnot flower that entire year. they make new leaves from the stalks when 70s and 60s are seen as day temps. this will happen in your area around may and your bush will have blooms but early july

for your lawn maybe some soy grass . this grass is so ugly in the winter and looks nothing more than straw. then in mid may your lawn will be the GREENEST lawn on the block. the only bad thing is is that it is the last to come back and the first to die, but it is worth it. the grass is like a rug.

for planting the grass you may need those carpets with grass already planted on the rug.

for watering although a bit costly a underground sprinkeler system will keep your grass greener longer.

Is my yard “partial sun” or “shade” and how important is that, really?

I’m trying to figure out what I can grow in my front yard. My house faces North and the flower beds in the front seem to never be in direct sunlight. To me that would imply “shade.”

But there is a hydrangea plant in my flowerbed that bloomed last year, and when I was plant shopping last night, the ones I saw said they were good for full sun and partial shade. I also seem to have daffodils coming up in the same flowerbeds. I though those were also plants that needed full sun.

In fact, the only plant I could find for partial shade to shade was something that looked like an elephant ear but was red. (Not so good with the plant names…). It wasn’t unattractive, but I’d like just a little more variety.

So how do I know which category my yard falls into?

Dos it really matter if I put a partial sun plant into a shaded area? Will it actually not grow, or will it just grow less than it could have?
Is my yard “partial sun” or “shade” and how important is that, really?
The north side of the house is considered partial shade. Hydrangea and daffodil do just fine on this side of the house because they are receiving bright indirect sun. Choose any plant that says part sun or part shade to full shade. You won't usually find a very good selection at your local 5 and dime store. Go to a real garden center or shop on line to find great plants you'll be happy with. Check my sites below.

PS Yes it does matter what the label says. Sometimes your plant will grow in other situations but not to there potential.
Reply:Too much sun will burn some plants. If the area is in the sun all the time, no trees etc to shade it, it is full sun.

Part sun means sun some time but not all the time.

Shaded is no or very little sun.

A partial sun plant in a shaded area may grow, just depends on the conditions combined.

Just see what works best for you. Supposedly, you cannot grow roses bushes in containers but I can. I live in an apartment and have no yard do so all of my plants are in containers.
Reply:there is such a thing as micro-climate. this is where the area is affected by something eg close to house and so behaves differently.

The thing is that you can plant what you want. If it grows great - it is happy. If it doesn't then the situation is not to it's needs.

also when it comes to shade and sun it also depends on when the area is sunny.

    Just enjoy.

There are a lot of plants that will be happy in many places. maybe they won't be as enormous as they might be elsewhere but just try. Don't be foolish in your choices as some plants have definite needs.

What I have learned is that the worst thing that cna happen is the plant becomes compost.
Reply:If your not seeing direct sunlight, then it's not full sun. Some plants and bushes recommended for full sun will grow for a few years in partial sun or shady areas, but will not be as full or flowers as well. Eventually they may die out completely, as they never quite get the light they need to store up the energy for the next year. There are a lot of plants and shrubs that grow best in shade or indirect sun. I've listed a link to one company that I typed "shade" into their search to give you ideas for plants to look for in your area. Shade gardens can be like a walk in the woods-lush ferns, lacey red and pink astilbe.
Reply:If you put sun plants in a shadier area than they're supposed to be, watch how much you water them. They may need more fertilizer if you get something that flowers...

Mona lavender is good for shade/part sun

It has purple flowers in the fall with an interesting scent. It's a member of the mint family if that helps.

There are many varieties of ferns that you can get too. Japanese painted fern is a beautiful variation.

When you go to the plant store, just ask one of the people there for help with shade/part sun plants. At the very least they'll point you in the right direction.

Please I don't have a green thumb and need to know?

A couple of years ago I had some landscaping done. I told the landscaper to make things he planted as simple and care free as possible, yeah right, thanks alot for listening to me. NOT

Anyway one of the things they planted was "Nikko Blue Hydrangeas", 3 of them. I really am not good with plants and I've been going on line trying to understand how the heck to care for these plants, especially pruning them.

If there's anyone out here reading this that know's how to care for these plants.......please answer my question. But do it in such a way as ofI was 5 years old, so I can really understand it. If I knew someone that had a hydrangea it would be alot easier for me to just watch and see what there doing as for prunning ect. But unfortunatly I don't.

Thank you for any and all help. I'll be gratefull. I know these are beautiful plants and worth the time and effort!
Please I don't have a green thumb and need to know?
All of the previous answers provide good, sound advice.

I can add just a few things

In my experience Hydrangeas like fertile, well drained soil. They will grow in heavy soil, but not as well.

You don't say what part of the country you are in, but if you are in the warmer portions of the country you should not plant hydrangeas in full sun. They prefer partially shaded areas, and like constant watering. When they are in dry soil they wither and blooms fade quickly.

You can change the color of the blooms using fertilizer. Making the soil acidic produces blue flowers while making it base produces pink flowers. You can even produce different color blooms on the same plant by applying different fertilizers to each side of the plant.

In addition to a beautiful and colorful show while blooming another thing I really like about hydrangeas is how easy the flowers are to dry and use a s a colorful display inside all winter. My wife picks the hardest blooms just at the end of their blooming cycle and air drys them. They turn a beautiful soft pink-lavender and brighten any room all winter.

You have made a great plant choice.
Reply:Hi - can you be more specific about what is wrong with your hydrangea? They are actually really easy plants to care for. They like a slow release fertilizer and at least half of the day in sunshine. 100% shade could cause some damage.
Reply:The basic rule of thumb with pruning is to prune right after flowering. Since Nikko Blues flower in later summer, prune in August.

Prune by cutting back flowering stems to a pair of healthy buds, they will be opposite one another on the stem. In winter or early spring before leaf out, prune out weak or winter-damaged stems to the ground or to where they attach to stronger stems. Be careful not to overprune in this winter pruning least you remove too much good wood that wants to flower come summer. This is a sanitary prune, to remove old, dead, weak stuff.
Reply:You should study pruning techniques - get some books at the library - because there is really no way anyone can tell you how to prune in the format we have here. Nikko Blue blooms on last year's growth. There is no need to prune it for size unless it gets out of control, which it shouldn't. Some experts suggest leaving the flowers on until spring, thinking that this helps to protect the tender buds over the winter. Others advocate pruning the old flowers off once they have bloomed. Whichever way you go, this is really all you should have to do. Just make sure you don't cut into anything that looks like a bud and you should be all right.
Reply:I have had a beautiful hydrangea growing at my back door, for like 8 years (a guess) I have never pruned it, it just keeps on growing and flowering and I leave it alone. It did take it a few years to get established and start blooming but It is very happy where it is.
Reply:I have some very beautiful hydrangeas, blue. My experience has been that these plants are self aligning as to uniformity and have never needed to prune them, they are now several years old. Have you considered justing leaving them to see if they get out of hand. They are quite a large bush and if that is the problem perhaps a minature variety is available.

    Reception colors?

My wedding is in July in Vermont. Finding vendors has been difficult, especially flowers. After many ideas denied by florist, we have settled on purple/white hydrangeas with a white peonese (sp?).. but mostly purple. The reception is in an all white tent. My concern, which could be completely off, is that it will be too much white if I have white table cloths. I am thinking of an ivory tablecloth with a sheer ivory overlay. Is this too white? Does anyone have other suggestions for tablecloth colors?
    Reception colors?
what color will the ribbons for your flowers be? I would use that color, either a white or off white for the table cloths....at least the under cloth that reaches to the floor....there can be a smaller cloth that only hangs down about 10-18 inches from the top...that is a color that coordinates or compliments the colors in your flowers. Don't have all white in an all white tent.
Reply:a cream color would look so pretty with those flowers you described

    good luck and congrasts!!
Reply:well I personally dont think a wedding can have TOO much white unless the bride is maybe, like, 80 yrs old or something, but if ur using purple flowers(I think the ones u listed are medium to dark purple, right?)...so how about a lilac coloured tablecloth? Its purple with enough white mixed in so its not like a lavender or something like that. Hope this helps. Congrats!!

also, if it helps, u could scatter petals from ur flowers on the table for a splash of colour.
Reply:why not add more purple and shades of purple as accent colors. make the bridal table as the white and then additional tables in like purple and lavender and lilac and amethyst you could also use grapes as decorations or accents. the leaves with the grapes are actually very pretty that would also be a good idea for centerpieces maybe a pillar candle surrounded by grapes and leaves (do not need to be real) silver is also a good accent color with purple or antique gold or even black

Do you guys like this flower? picture included?

Do you guys like this flower? picture included?
I think both of those flowers are lovely.

For my wedding, I'm having some hygrangeas; I love their petals because they look like clusters of butterflies or something.

I think the Fuji mums would stand out a whole lot better and give the guests something to anticipate because it's not every day that you get to see those (unless you live in a botanical garden).
Reply:Really depends on the tone of the wedding...You don't want them to stick out like a sore thumb. If your having an exotic wedding go with the first one, otherwise, I would go with hydrangeas
Reply:hydrangeas are so overdone! choose the mum. i don't know how many weddings i've been to with hydrangeas and while they are pretty, it's just nice to see something more creative and new. And they are so modern and elegant looking too!

    Love the mum!
Reply:I like both. hydrangeas are used a lot at weddings though, also you may not be able to get a very deep blue or purple, it's hard to grow them that way.
Reply:I don't like those mums, but I have always loved the hydrangeas.
    Reply:Hydrangea!!! It's a classical flower...and it's hardier then most give credit! :)

    One word...

    GORGEOUS...

Yippee...I'm having Hydrangea's at my shower for the centerpieces this Sunday! :)
Reply:my friend had the hydrangeas for her guys in the wedding, they die fast! and fall apart. If you want something to last for your pictures and all the way up to the reception i would choose something else..
Reply:I like the Fuji mum, it is beautiful.
    Reply:nice :)
Reply:I really really like the Fuji mums. They are a good traditional color for a wedding. The hydrangeas are a little too purple/blue for me. I think staying to classic white is better!
Reply:The Fuji Mums are absolutely Beautiful!!!
Reply:I am using hydrangeas for my wedding flowers. I did not know this but my florist told me, that hydrangeas are very susceptible to shrinking (somewhat wilting) when they are used in arrangements. So as long as they are not completely alone it will be okay, but with them standing on there own the shrinkage he said would be visible. We are mixing them with a few other flowers, but they are my favorite.
Reply:I think you should go with the fuji mums especially if the wedding is outdoors. I used to work with a florist and hydrageas are very hard to keep fresh looking. You wouldn't want your flowers to be wilted by the time the event start. If your wedding is early spring it should be ok though. Personally as far as looks I would go with the mums.
Reply:Fuji mums have WAY more class.
Reply:i think u should go with the hydranges there really pretty and lovely colour
    Reply:if its outside...go with the hydrangeas...but inside...definantely the fuji mum....good luck!
Reply:Go with the mum. It's a very exotic looking flower. Hydrangeas are played out, and personally, I don't like them.
    Reply:I like both of them...
Reply:The first flower is beautiful and exotic!! I don't know if I'd still like it after I found out the price.
Reply:ooo please do the Fuji Mum. I love it. Everyone does hydrangeas. Are you guys having like a tropical themed wedding or something? Just wondering, but in any case, I love the first flower
Reply:I'm not so sure about the Fuji mums. I wasn't so sure about the hydrangeas when I was looking at them for my own wedding, but now I love them! :). I think hydrangeas done well would be beautiful. Good luck and best wishes!
Reply:Hydrangeas, I feel the mums have a Thanksgiving feel about them.
Reply:Do the Fuji mum! They are so pretty, my Fiance sent me a flower arrangement last year that had a few in it and they were gorgeous! I took a picture around to everyone I knew wanting to know what they were and nobody knew what they were called but everyone loved them! I think it's a really nice change and people will really notice. Hydrangeas are really pretty also, they are just common.
