When is the proper time to prune a hydrangea?

The proper timing to prune hydrangeas depends on what type of hydrangea you are growing. Bigleaf hydrangeas produce blooms on previous years growth. So prune back stems that have flowered to about 2 feet high, right after they finish blooming. As Pee Gee hydrangeas flower on new growth, they should be pruned in early spring to about 6 - 12" height. Oak leaf hydrangeas require very little pruning but can be pruned in early spring as well.

read NEERA S.......some hydrangeas bloom on second year wood, meaning you should only prune the branches that bloomed last year....like lilacs.....or some roses. You should look up the variety you have and go from there....good luck. Also you can change the colour of the flower by altering the Ph level of the soil.
Reply:You can cut hydrangeas RIGHT back and the best time is when they stop flowering. They are very hardy but still need some water to look their best. Also, you can make them healthier with the right fertilizer (most are OK) AND you can make them brighter with minerals such as iron (but choose the right one as they can change the colour of the plant from pink to blue or vise versa). The nurseries have them.
