Will our plants survive the late frost?

We had an early and hot spring (several weeks over 85). It was beautiful, all the leaves and flowers bloomed, even the hydrangeas grew unseasonally large. Then we had a "dogwood winter", where the temperature dropped during Easter Week to below 27 degrees - Although we covered everything with plastic, it killed all the new leaves (even on the large Poplar trees). Will our established plants (trees and ornamental shrubs) re-leaf and survive? What about the perrenials? I am assuming the annuals will die? Is there anything I can do for them now that it warm again?

I'm from Missouri the only thing I know for sure is my roses will. I had them covered up for several days when the temperature dropped. I checked them today and they look fine. I have several Japanese maples that look pretty bad. If you have daylillies they might pull out of it. I'm going to mix some root hormone in warm water and pour that around some of my plants to boost the root system again.

I once did that with a pampas grass I planted in a December freezing weather then put about 2 feet of loose straw over it . Plant was fine!

PS . I bought this plant fabric at Big Lots and I have a roll of netting to keep leaves out of my garden pond I wrapped that around the roses then the fabric just to make sure nothing touches the plants. When you cover that's the most important part. You might want to check that out.

Reply:Only time will tell. We had a cold and windy winter, and I was so worried that we lost lots of plants outside. Experts told me to give it some time to recover and see what happens. Don't give up too quickly. My mums and other plants gradually came back and now got lots of baby leaves. Next time, make sure you mulch a lot, when you know you will have a cold weather coming, because most of the time, the plants above the ground may die, but it will survive under ground(The roots part) and come back later.
